The Miami Marlins have a key injury to monitor this offseason.

During the Marlins’ end-of-season media conference, president of baseball operations Peter Bendix announced that center fielder Jakob Marsee will see Dr. Keith Meister after experiencing left elbow discomfort at the end of the season.

Marsee, 25, played in 155 games this season and slashed .231/.348/.359 with 11 home runs, 41 RBI, and 23 stolen bases.

Those less-than-ideal numbers largely stemmed from Marsee’s struggles over his first 111 games. Through Aug. 6, he hit below the Mendoza line at .199, posted an OPS of .621, and hit just six home runs with 28 RBI.

However, Marsee returned to the exciting form he showed during his first MLB stint to close out 2026.

Over his final 44 games, Marsee turned things around by slashing .309/.418/.497 with five home runs and 13 RBI. His turnaround showed that the Marsee who immediately burst onto the scene after an August call-up last year was still there. Over his first 55 career games, Marsee hit .292 with a .841 OPS, five home runs, and 33 RBI.

But in September, Marsee didn’t just return to form; he took his game to the next level. Over 23 games, he slashed .342/.441/.544 with three home runs and 10 RBI.

Notably, Marsee did not play in Miami’s regular-season finale last Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.

If Marsee is forced to miss time, Esteury Ruiz could see more playing time in center field next season.

But filling his shoes will be a tall task, not just offensively, but defensively. Marsee’s +9 Outs Above Average this season finished in the 94th percentile in the majors and just outside the top 10 among all qualified outfielders.

The Marlins could also give their No. 5 prospect Cam Cannarella his first taste of the big leagues. The former Clemson Tigers star tore up the minors this season and finished 2026 with Triple-A Jacksonville. Cannarella slashed .324/.422/.512 with 15 home runs, 57 RBI, and 21 stolen bases over 98 games across three affiliates.

So while the Marlins have options to replace Marsee should he be sidelined long-term, Miami is certainly hoping to have its young center fielder healthy and at his best when the 2027 season begins.
