Marlins Part Ways With Hitting Coach Pedro Guerrero

Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix met with the media today to discuss various topics. Bendix mentioned that hitting coach Pedro Guerrero will not be back with the club next year. Christina De Nicola of MLB.com was among those to relay the news. The rest of the coaching staff is expected to return.

“He did a tremendous job for us,” Bendix said of Guerrero. “He’s a wonderful human being. We’re going to miss having him around, and really appreciate everything that Pedro gave to us. Just time for a new voice in the hitting space.”

Guerrero was hired by the Marlins going into the 2025 season. He had previously served as the assistant hitting coach for the Phillies and Giants. Miami’s offense has been middle of the pack since Guerrero came aboard. Last year, Marlins hitters had a combined .250/.314/.393 batting line and 96 wRC+, indicating they were 4% worse than league average on the whole. The 2026 club improved slightly, getting to a .249/.326/.400 line and 100 wRC+.

It’s always tough to determine how much credit or blame to give to a specific coach since he doesn’t control which players are on the roster. Also, many players consult with various outside organizations and personal hitting instructors these days, making it all the more difficult to tell what impact a team’s hitting coach is having.

“Evaluating a hitting coach is very difficult,” Bendix said. “That role is very, very difficult. I think we have a unique structure here, not just in the hitting department, but in all of our departments, with a director, a director of hitting, in this case, that oversees our hitting space. And so really looking for that sort of alignment from top to bottom with our director, with our entire hitting coaches. That’s what we’ll be prioritizing.”
