Marlins pitcher gets drilled in the head by his own catcher

Miami Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers took some friendly fire on Saturday from his own catcher.

Just after Weathers had delivered his final warmup pitcher before Saturday’s start against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fl., his catcher, Nick Fortes, drilled him in the head. Fortes was trying to throw the ball down to second base, but he caught Weathers right in the head instead.

Weathers went down in a heap, but was able to recover and start the game anyway.

On rare occasions, we have actually seen players get knocked out of the game by incidents like this, though they usually happen during play. This one was a warmup throw, which might have saved Weathers from something worse.

This feels like a good summary of how things have gone for the Marlins this season. They entered play Saturday in last place in the NL East with a 23-38 record.

Weathers wound up going three innings, allowing three runs with a walk and a strikeout. He has been one of the team’s bright spots this season, with a 2.49 ERA in his first four starts.
