Marlins Select Patrick Monteverde

The Marlins announced Wednesday that they’ve selected the contract of lefty Patrick Monteverde from Triple-A Jacksonville and optioned fellow lefty Cade Gibson to Jacksonville in his place. Miami already had an open spot on the 40-man roster after designating left-handed reliever John King for assignment recently.

Monteverde, 28, will bring some length to a taxed Miami bullpen that used seven different relievers yesterday. Gibson, who’s been optioned out, tossed 21 pitches yesterday and 15 the day prior. Miami probably wanted to stay away from using him today anyhow.

Monteverde has spent the bulk of the season working as a starter in Jacksonville, where he’s turned in a 5.84 ERA in 91 innings. He made his major league debut with Miami last year but had since been outrighted off the 40-man roster. He tossed 3 2/3 frames in 2025 but was tagged for four runs in the long major league appearance of his career.

Miami drafted Monteverde in the eighth round back in 2021. He’s spent his entire career in the Marlins system. The Texas Tech product posted strong numbers in both High-A and Double-A but has never found much consistency at the top minor league level. Monteverde has worked parts of three Triple-A seasons and logged a combined 5.69 ERA in 264 1/3 innings.

It could be a brief stay on the roster for Monteverde, though he has minor league options remaining and doesn’t necessarily need to be designated for assignment if and when the Fish cycle him out for a fresh arm. For now, he’ll join Dax Fulton as both a second lefty and a second long-relief option in Clayton McCullough’s bullpen.
