The San Francisco Giants have lost four straight games and now face an uphill battle to return to the postseason, currently sitting 5.5 games back of the third NL Wild Card spot.
At the trade deadline, the team opted to part ways with key contributors—relievers Trevor Rogers and Camilo Doval, along with longtime outfielder Mike Yastrzemski—in a move to retool for future seasons.
Since the team chose not to push in the chips this season, the Giants have slid further down the standings, partly due to Matt Chapman’s offensive struggles.
The 32-year-old third baseman has struggled over the past two weeks, posting a .146 batting average and .436 OPS with zero home runs.
Ahead of the series finale on Wednesday against the San Diego Padres, Chapman was notably left out of the lineup card with Casey Schmitt taking his position at third base.
An update surfaced before the game via Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle, “Matt Chapman is dealing with some soreness on his previously sprained hand. So he will get today and off day to recover a bit.”

Chapman originally suffered a sprained right hand on June 8 and was placed on the 10-day injured list, missing 23 games. The soreness may be contributing to his recent struggles at the plate.
Chapman is still having a productive season through 96 games, batting .229 with a .761 OPS, 16 home runs, and 44 RBIs. His offensive production is a plus given that his true value comes on the defensive end, where he’s collected five Gold Glove Awards in his nine-year MLB career.
Chapman signed a six-year, $151 million contract extension with the Giants last year, keeping him with the team through 2030.
