The 2025 MLB season is almost upon us and so is a crucial year for the Philadelphia Phillies. Fresh off an NL East title, but subsequent loss in the NLDS, the Fightins are once again hunting for Red October and an elusive third World Series Championship.
Over the next few days, we'll be taking you through each player with a chance at making the Phils' active roster and discussing expectations for all of them. Next up is a pitcher who grew up right across the Delaware river...
Name: Tyler Phillips
Number: 48
Position: Pitcher
Throws: Right
Build: 6'5", 225 lbs.
Age: 27
Acquired: Claimed off Waivers from Texas Rangers in 2021
Socials: Instagram
2024 Stats: 4-1, 6.87 ERA with 28 Ks, seven BBs, and a .338 opponent OBP over eight appearances (36.2 IP) with the Phillies. Phillips had a great first month in the bigs, capped off by a complete game shutout against the Cleveland Guardians on July 27. However, he struggled mightily in his next three starts, earning him a trip back to the minors. He had a 5.08 ERA with 100 Ks and 49 BBs in 20 starts (118.2 IP) with Lehigh Valley.
2025 Projections: Phillips was a great success story for a few weeks. Despite not being on Philly's Top 30 prospects list, a strong June in AAA and the need for a 5th starter gave him a chance with his childhood team. Then his chief problem - letting a bad pitch or two snowball into an onslaught of runs allowed - emerged again and undid much of the progress he made. Those struggles have continued into the spring, and even with no minor league options remaining, it's hard for a championship contender to justify keeping Phillips on their roster.
Philly is waiting as long as they can to expose their local arm to waivers again, but unless someone in the pen gets injured soon, the call will have to come soon.
