Mets ace Jacob deGrom changing mechanics shouldn't impact his production?

The New York Mets revealed some good news regarding the stress reaction in the scapula of ace Jacob deGrom's pitching shoulder when they confirmed that the latest MRI and CT scan showed "considerable healing."

However, there remains no timetable for when the two-time Cy Young Award winner may be cleared to resume throwing, and eyes were raised Monday when it was learned deGrom's mechanics through the preseason caused "undue stress on his shoulder," and that the 33-year-old will attempt "to minimize the aggressive nature of his motion" whenever he begins his latest throwing program.

Orthopedic sports surgeon Deepak Chona, MD hasn't personally examined deGrom but has monitored the situation throughout April. Chona spoke with SNY's Danny Abriano about deGrom's plans to alter his mechanics later this spring.

"Naturally, this raises red flags," Chona admitted. "Will the change in technique affect his production? Our answer is 'probably not.' Jacob deGrom has been highly effective for many years prior to sustaining this scapular stress fracture ... He should be able to revert to the mechanics that both served him well and kept his shoulder healthy in the past."

Chona added that deGrom "is very likely in the clear" as it pertains to potentially reinjuring the shoulder "as long as he follows a reasonable rehab protocol."

Per Anthony DiComo of the Mets' website, deGrom will undergo another MRI roughly three weeks from Monday night/early Tuesday morning. Such a timeline suggests the right-hander, who hasn't faced an MLB batter in a regular-season game since July 7, may not take the bump again before mid-June at the earliest.

Lingering elbow issues cost deGrom the second half of the 2021 campaign.

As for the Mets, they'll enter Tuesday's matchup at the St. Louis Cardinals as the league's first team to reach 13 wins this season.
