Yankees vs. Mets. An age-old rivalry in baseball's mecca highlights the MLB's rivalry weekend, and this year, there is plenty at stake for both teams.
While the rivalry had lost some importance in recent years, it was re-ignited in 2024 when superstar Juan Soto opted to sign his historic new contract in Queens rather than the Bronx. Just weeks after leading the Yankees to the World Series, Soto inked a 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets.
It's difficult to say either team has changed much since the Soto signing. The Yankees made the playoffs in 2025 but were ousted in the ALDS by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets have arguably been worse with Soto. After losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 NLCS, the Mets missed the playoffs in 2025 and are on that same path in 2026.
But there's plenty of overlap between the two teams that adds additional layers to this weekend's series. The Mets also signed both Luke Weaver and Devin Williams away from the Yankees this offseason. Friday's starter for the Mets is Clay Holmes, the former closer for the Yankees, now turned starter.

After sweeping the Detroit Tigers this week, the Mets are looking to turn things around. The team has been led by an injection of youth from this year's version of the "Baby Mets." Carson Benge, Nolan McLean, and the recently called-up A.J. Ewing have reignited the team and fanbase. The Mets find themselves in last place in the NL East Division, but a crucial series victory over their cross-town rivals would go a long way in building some momentum.
The Yankees, on the other hand, cruised through the first couple of months but have recently hit some rough waters. The Bronx Bombers have dropped six of their last eight games, including a discouraging three-game sweep to the Milwaukee Brewers. To make matters worse, left-handed starter Max Fried left Wednesday's game with posterior soreness in his left elbow. While this area of the arm isn't indicative of UCL damage, a stint on the IL hasn't been ruled out.
This weekend's Subway Series sees two New York trains heading in opposite directions. The Mets have underperformed greatly, especially considering the talent on their roster. The Yankees have perhaps overperformed this year and are running into injuries and some uncharacteristic offensive struggles. Both teams need a series victory to get back on track.
The Subway Series begins Friday night at Citi Field with Cam Schlittler facing former Yankees closer Clay Holmes.
