New York Mets third baseman Brett Baty took a while to heat up, but he's been a key piece for the team this season.

The 25-year-old slashed just .212/.275/.323 with nine homers and 34 RBIs over 108 games in 2023, his first full season. He improved to a .229/.306/.327 slash line last year, but he played just 50 MLB games as he split time between the big leagues and minor leagues.

However, Baty found his rhythm at the top level in 2025. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder entered Friday's matchup with the Miami Marlins slashing .255/.314/.436 with 18 homers and 50 RBIs in 129 games. He also had a .276/.323/.466 slash line in September.

Unfortunately for Baty, though, he exited Friday's game early with an injury. New York later provided an update via its social media.

"Brett Baty was removed from today's game with right side soreness," the team said.

Baty went down the tunnel after grimacing following a swing and a throw from third base in the first inning, via SNY. He grounded out to second base in his only at-bat.

Backup infielder Ronny Mauricio subbed in for Baty in the bottom of the second. New York can also use Mark Vientos, who's slashing .233/.286/.413 with 17 homers and 61 RBIs over 119 games, at third base if Baty misses time moving forward.

Brett Baty Injury Comes at Unlucky Time for Mets

Side soreness isn't as bad as structural damage to a ligament, for example, but New York doesn't have much time for its players to heal. The Cincinnati Reds entered Friday's slate just one game behind it for the third and final NL wild card spot, and the regular season ends on Sunday.

The Mets already have a laundry list of players who are out for the season , including designated hitter Jesse Winker (back) as well as starting pitchers Tylor Megill (elbow), Griffin Canning (Achilles), and Frankie Montas (elbow), via MLB.com. Now, they may have to secure a playoff spot without another regular member of the lineup.
