The New York Mets fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Now 4-6 in Spring Training action, the Mets are off on Wednesday before resuming Grapefruit League play on Thursday against the Houston Astros.

While New York bolstered its lineup this offseason by signing left-handed slugger Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million contract, the Mets have lost some key pitchers to start the season. Expected to begin the year without Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, New York is hoping for some quality innings out of its pitching depth.

With several intriguing arms in camp, the Mets could have additional opportunities available.

One of the intriguing pitchers New York has has in Spring Training is former Chicago Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay. With a breakout season in 2023, Alzolay was a star out of the bullpen for Chicago. The 6-foot-1 right-hander appeared in a career-high 58 games that season, posting a 160 ERA+ while striking out 67 batters in 64 innings pitched.

Last season did not go as well for Alzolay, as he was limited to just 18 outings in which he posted a 4.67 ERA while surrendering six home runs in 17.1 innings pitched, one more than the five he allowed all of 2023.

On Tuesday, Alzolay was among the Mets players reassigned to minor league camp.

Undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024, Alzolay was hoping to stick with the Mets after signing a two-year, minor league deal with the franchise ahead of Spring Training (via Will Sammon of The Athletic).

While there may be another opportunity with New York for the former Cubs star, he is heading to minor league camp for now.
