Pete Alonso erupted for another excellent season with the New York Mets. Unfortunately, the Mets still collapsed in the second half of 2025, missing the MLB postseason after entering the year with World Series aspirations. Alonso immediately opted out of his two-year, $54 million contract signed during last year’s offseason. The 30-year-old right-handed slugger will enter unrestricted free agency at the conclusion of the World Series.
Alonso posted a .272 batting average, .347 on-base percentage, .871 OPS, 38 home runs and 126 RBIs across 162 games last year. Alonso played in all 162 games for a second straight year and has shown no signs of slowing down at the plate despite the heavy workload.
As Alonso enters the offseason in search of a long-term deal, his future with the Mets remains up in the air. The slugger, who holds the franchise record with 264 home runs, was named a finalist for the Silver Slugger Award at first base in the National League. He joins teammates Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor as New York’s representatives. The Mets acknowledged the trio’s nominations on X. “Congratulations to Pete Alonso, Juan Soto, and Francisco Lindor on being named National League Silver Slugger finalists! ,” the team announced.

The Silver Slugger Award is presented each year to the top offensive players at every position. Managers and coaches from all NL teams vote based on a mix of offensive statistics and personal evaluation.

Alonso has continued to be honored for his dominance in the batter’s box. If he takes home the award, it would be the first of his career. Alonso has been selected to five All-Star Games in his career and has also won the Home Run Derby twice.
If Alonso departs in free agency, New York’s lineup would suffer to find a replacement that can replicate his production. Alonso also remains a fan favorite and one of the most impactful players the organization has ever had. The Mets have a lot of decisions to make in the offseason addressing the lack of pitching depth, yet losing Alonso could be a huge blow.
