With a long and frustrating regular season winding down for the New York Mets , the team recalled a veteran reliever to bolster the pitching staff and officially brought infielder Jorge Polanco’s first season in Queens to an end.
Ahead of New York’s series opener against the Houston Astros , the team recalled reliever Chris Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse. Devenski spent his first five MLB seasons with the Astros, which included an AL All-Star appearance and a World Series ring in 2017. The 35-year-old was a high-leverage arm for the Astros and spent some time as the team’s closer.

Devenski first signed with the Mets in the winter of 2024-2025 and made 13 appearances for the team last season. He was designated for assignment in September and elected free agency once the season was over. He signed a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates in January of this year, but rejected an option to Triple-A Indianapolis and became a free agent once again. On August 11, Devenski signed another minor league deal to return to the Mets.
In a corresponding move, the Mets transferred infielder Jorge Polanco to the 60-day IL, officially bringing his first season with the team to a close. Polanco has struggled with Achilles bursitis all season and has only managed to appear in 37 games. Polanco underwent season-ending surgery earlier this week, per manager Andy Green.
Polanco was brought in as a replacement for Pete Alonso, who signed with the Baltimore Orioles in free agency. The trade-off between the two players looks even worse, given how hot Alonso has been over the past month.
Roster move: the Mets called up veteran reliever Chris Devenski to the Major League roster. Had multiple stints with the big club last season. Called up just in time to face the Astros, the team he won a World Series with in 2017.

The Mets also assigned pitcher Xzavion Curry back to Triple-A Syracuse to make room for Devenski on the roster. New York hosts the Astros on Friday in the first of a three-game set at Citi Field.
