Mets Could Trade More Pitching to Cubs

The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs already made a trade with each other last month when left-handed pitcher David Peterson landed in the Windy City for top prospect first baseman/third baseman Cole Mathis.

Now, they could swing another deal together with the August 3 MLB trade deadline just six days away.

The Mets have had scouts on the Cubs' minor league system, specifically their Double-A team.

New York has a number of arms that would fit the Cubs, including starters Clay Holmes and Freddy Peralta, as well as relievers Brooks Raley, A.J. Minter, Luke Weaver and Huascar Brazoban.

Holmes, who is coming back from a fractured fibula suffered on May 15, made his second rehab start on Tuesday night and tossed four shutout innings on 59 pitches (37 strikes) for Low-A St. Lucie. The righty has a $12 million player option for 2027. He is expected to get dealt at the deadline.

The Cubs' pitching staff has been decimated by injuries this season. Cade Horton, Justin Steele, Edward Cabrera, Ben Brown, Daniel Palencia, Phil Maton, Hunter Harvey, Hoby Milner, Porter Hodge, Riley Martin and Ethan Roberts are all currently on the IL.

Regardless, Chicago has managed to eclipse a 61-46 record and holds a 5.5 game lead on the top National League Wild Card spot. The Cubs remain six games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central division, but should be a playoff team this year.

If the Cubs add pitching at the deadline, they will have a chance to make some noise in the postseason come October.

As for the Mets, it has been a nightmare season for them. Despite having a $380 million payroll, New York is in last place in the NL East with a 45-62 record. For that, the Mets are going to be selling off pieces over the course of the next week.

The Mets are open to moving any expiring contract on their roster: Peralta, Holmes, Raley, Minter, Tyrone Taylor. They could also trade Weaver (owed $11 million in 2027) and Brazoban (under club control through 2029).
