Mets Designate Chris Devenski For Assignment

The Mets announced that they have recalled right-hander Jack Weisenburger from Triple-A Syracuse. Fellow righty Chris Devenski has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move.

Devenski is a veteran journeyman. He was added to New York’s roster in late August. At the time, rosters were capped at 26 and Xzavion Curry had thrown 2 1/3 innings of relief the day before. Curry was optioned and Devenski called up to give the club a fresh arm in the bullpen. Since then, rosters have expanded to 28 and the club was off yesterday, giving their entire bullpen a day to rest. Nolan McLean is starting tonight and has gone at least six innings in 14 of his last 16 starts.

The Mets are playing out the string on what will almost certainly be a losing season. They are 68-78 and ten games back of a playoff spot. They have been better lately but would have to finish red hot get to .500. They’re ten games back of a playoff spot. Devenski is a 35-year-old impending free agent, so he gives the club no long-term value. With their remaining contests, the Mets can give more big league exposure to younger and controllable pitchers like Weisenburger.

With the trade deadline having passed, Devenski will have to be placed on waivers. He just cleared waivers last month and will probably do so again. If that comes to pass, he will have the right to elect free agency. He was really good with the Astros back in 2016 and 2017 but has a 5.39 ERA in 235 1/3 innings since the start of the 2018 season.
