Mets Facing Backlash for Decision Announced on Sunday

The New York Mets have played at Citi Field since 2009, replacing Shea Stadium which was built a block away. The team has experienced multiple playoff runs since then, including last year's trip to the NLCS and 2015's World Series run.

The last 16 years are a microcosm of the franchise's entire existence, as it's often come just short of winning it all. Stars such as Mike Piazza and Rickey Henderson led them to the NLCS and World Series in 1999 and 2000, respectively, but the team hasn't won a ring since 1986.

The Mets have as good of a chance as they've had since moving into Citi Field to do it this season after acquiring four-time All-Star Juan Soto. However, fans don't want the team to forget about its past.

The Mets changed Citi's "Piazza Club" into the "Heineken Diamond Lounge," which fans aren't happy about.

"Mets really removed a Piazza themed club for this??" one person asked.

"Disgusting," another fan wrote.

"BOOOOOOOOOOOO," a fan exclaimed.

"That’s ridiculous and an insult to Piazza," a fan added.

Piazza, a 2016 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, player for New York from 1998-2005. The former catcher slashed .296/.373/.542 with 220 homers and 655 RBI as a Met. He also hit at least 33 home runs each year between '99 and '02, including 40 in '99.

Piazza was a 12-time All-Star and also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, and Oakland Athletics.

The Mets start their regular-season slate with road series against the Houston Astros and Miami Marlins before their home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 5.
