Nearly three weeks ago, the New York Mets were dealt another injury blow to their injury-riddled catcher.
Francisco Álvarez suffered a torn right meniscus after taking a swing in the sixth inning during the Mets' game against the Detroit Tigers on May 12.
It was a major blow for the Mets and Álvarez in particular, who has had a hard time staying healthy over the last couple of seasons.
While the initial timetable for the 24-year-old's return was six to eight weeks, Álvarez has made remarkable strides during his rehab, two weeks after going under the knife.
Álvarez was even seen over the last few days taking live batting practice, including a full session on Friday. He was even seen doing some catching work and throwing, another incredible sight to see just 15 days after his surgery.

Ahead of New York's series opener against the Miami Marlins tonight, manager Carlos Mendoza thinks the backstop is getting closer to taking another step in his rehab.
"He looks pretty normal, he's amazing," Mendoza said. "He's catching bullpens, blocking, throwing, running, I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing in games as early as next week."

Mendoza also noted that the Mets would only want Álvarez back at full strength so he can be available to hit and catch.
It goes without saying that New York certainly needs its starting catcher back at some point this season. They have once again turned to Luis Torrens as their full-time starter, who, despite his great arm behind the plate, is not a proficient hitter.
The Mets' backup catcher for Torrens has been Hayden Senger, who has not shown during his year-plus experience that he belongs in the big leagues for the long haul.
Even though Álvarez has made remarkable strides in his rehab, it would not be a surprise if the Mets don't rush him back. They enter Friday in last place in the NL East, and unless they're able to turn things around, a mid-July return seems more likely for Francisco Álvarez.
