Mets Give Devin Williams Update

Williams, whom the Mets signed to a three-year, $51 million deal in the offseason as their closer, has been on the injured list since August 8 with a right shoulder strain.

New York brought in the right-hander shortly after losing fellow righty closer Edwin Díaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 42 games this year, Williams has a 4.66 ERA, has converted 16 of 19 save opportunities, and has 51 strikeouts and a 1.66 WHIP across 38.2 innings pitched.

Before landing on the IL, Williams posted a 2.73 ERA from April 26 through July 30, then gave up three runs over two innings in his final two appearances before going on the shelf.

Since losing their primary closer, the Mets have turned to an unlikely name in that role. That name is Kodai Senga, who, before serving up a game-tying home run to Pete Alonso on Tuesday, went 7-for-7 in save chances and posted a dazzling 2.03 ERA as New York’s closer after struggling so mightily as a starting pitcher over the last year and a half.

The Mets, however, are hoping, or at least anticipating, that Williams can return this season and finish strong in what has been a disappointing first stint in Flushing.
