Mets' Jacob deGrom to miss rest of regular season?

The New York Mets endured a terrible start to the weekend when manager Luis Rojas confirmed on Friday that ace Jacob deGrom was being shut down an additional two weeks after he visited sports surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to examine his lingering elbow inflammation.

The Mets were then swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers at home, and it appears things are continuing to go from bad to worse for the Amazins.

SNY's Andy Martino noted that deGrom is scheduled to have a routine check-up with Mets team physician Dr. David Altchek on Monday. While it's likely that nothing significant will come from that conversation, Martino also hinted that we may have seen the two-time National League Cy Young Award winner take the bump for the last time this year unless the Mets recover and make the playoffs without their best pitcher.

"Generally, pitchers need the same number of weeks to ramp up to game action as they missed," Martino wrote. "In the best-case scenario -- that is, without any additional setbacks -- deGrom would miss another two weeks, then need about four weeks to ramp back up."

Barring another setback that would inevitably shut deGrom down indefinitely, he's set to have an MRI on or around Aug. 27. The Mets close the regular season at the division-rival Atlanta Braves on Oct. 3, so time is running out for the 33-year-old to return for any pennant-race baseball.

New York is two-and-a-half games back of the first-place Braves in the N.L. East division standings heading into Monday's matchup at the San Francisco Giants.
