The New York Mets dropped Friday’s series opener against their crosstown rival Yankees by a final score of 5-2. Left-handed superstar Juan Soto crushed a solo home run off Cam Schlittler, but aside from that, the Yankees ace was in control all night.

It was more of the same for the struggling Mets, who now sit at 18-26, eight games under the .500 mark. Soto continues to deliver while the rest of the offense struggles behind him.

Through 29 games, he has posted a .271 batting average, .363 on-base percentage, .858 OPS, six home runs and 14 RBIs. Now in his second season of his massive 15-year, $765 million contract, Soto is doing everything he can to live up to it.

After the game, Soto spoke with reporters and issued an update on his health. The 27-year-old superstar has dealt with multiple injury setbacks in 2026, including a stint on the 10-day injured list in April due to a right calf strain.

Earlier this week, Soto left a game after fouling a ball off his right foot. Then on Friday, he appeared to grimace in discomfort after a strikeout in the fourth inning, though he remained in the game.

Soto addressed all of his recent issues after the loss and revealed that his newest injury was wrist discomfort. “That was just a little discomfort, but no pain at all. I have been dealing with a couple of things, the foul ball, the calf, elbow, everything. I am just trying to get back on track,” Soto said (h/t Jorge Castillo of ESPN).

Soto has almost no choice but to suit up for the Mets, who are trying to avoid becoming sellers at this year’s trade deadline. That is likely why he continues pushing through these minor issues, though it is clear he is not at full strength.

If Soto were to land on the injured list again, he would join superstar teammate Francisco Lindor along with three other everyday contributors in Jorge Polanco, Luis Robert Jr. and Francisco Alvarez. With the Mets already struggling to stack wins, losing Soto for any stretch would make their path back into the playoff picture even more challenging.
