Mets Make Change After Loss to Rays

The New York Mets are sending Dylan Ross back to the minors just one day after the right-hander made a clean major league debut against the Tampa Bay Rays.

New York optioned Ross to Triple-A Syracuse following Tuesday’s 6-2 loss to Tampa Bay, creating room for right-hander Justin Hagenman ahead of the series finale. The Mets announced the move through their official X account.

Ross made his major league debut in the loss and delivered a perfect inning, retiring all three batters he faced. It was an encouraging first appearance for a pitcher who had spent the season working toward his opportunity in New York.

The 26-year-old also flashed impressive velocity during his first appearance, reaching 99.2 mph with his fastball. Despite the brief stint, Ross leaves the majors with a 0.00 ERA after one scoreless inning. MLB lists Sept. 1, 2026, as his major league debut.

The move gives Ross an opportunity to continue developing at Syracuse rather than remain in a limited major league role. He had struggled in Triple-A this season, with his ERA sitting above six before the promotion.

Ross’ return to the minors also makes room for Hagenman, who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list. The right-hander is scheduled to start Wednesday’s series finale against Tampa Bay after working his way back from his injury.

The Mets are making the move during a difficult season, entering Wednesday with a 62-77 record and sitting 20 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East. Tuesday’s loss was another setback as New York tries to close out the season on a stronger note.

For Ross, the quick return to Syracuse does not erase what he accomplished in his debut. His perfect inning and high-end fastball gave the Mets another look at a potential bullpen option for the future.
