Mets make trade with Athletics for utility infielder

The New York Mets made a roster move Thursday aimed at improving infield flexibility, acquiring veteran utility player Andy Ibanez from the Athletics. The move also reflects the front office’s continued emphasis on versatility and depth as the roster evolves through the early portion of the season.

Although early reports initially described the move as a trade, the waiver process completed it after the team designated the veteran for assignment. The acquisition allows the Mets to add a versatile defender without giving up assets, reinforcing a strategy focused on depth and roster balance.

Ibanez brings experience across multiple positions, including second base, third base, and first base, offering the Mets added coverage in the infield. His ability to move around the diamond provides manager Carlos Mendoza with more lineup options, particularly in matchup-driven situations.

The update gained traction when BBWAA’s Francys Romero shared the news on X, formerly Twitter, confirming the team secured the 33-year-old infielder following his departure from the A’s.

Ibanez saw limited action with the Athletics and struggled to produce at the plate. However, the Mets value his versatility and experience, viewing him as a useful complementary piece rather than a primary offensive contributor.

The addition strengthens New York’s infield depth at a time when flexibility can be critical over the course of a long season. Players capable of filling multiple roles often become valuable assets as injuries and performance fluctuations arise.

After a brutal start that has left New York near the bottom of the National League, the Mets are expected to continue pursuing low-risk moves to upgrade the roster. This approach prioritizes adaptability, depth, and flexibility as the season unfolds, while providing insurance across multiple positions to help the team stay competitive amid inevitable roster challenges.
