The New York Mets started the 2025 MLB season with a series loss to the Houston Astros. Dropping two of three in Houston, the Mets opened a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park on Monday.

As the season was getting underway for New York, there were some intriguing transactions that took place. It was reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com on Thursday that outfielders Alexander Canario and José Azocar had both been designated for assignment.

Two days later, DiComo reported that Azocar had cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A, but there was no update on Canario.

New York acquired Canario from the Chicago Cubs during Spring Training, where he impressed with a 1.030 OPS in 43 plate appearances. An update on his future was finally provided on Monday, as DiComo reported he had been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash.

"Sources: The Mets have traded outfielder Alexander Canario to the Pirates for cash," he wrote.

The right-handed outfielder has limited MLB experience, but flashed a lot of upside in 21 games for the Cubs between 2023 and 2024. In 45 MLB plate appearances, Canario owns a 136 OPS+ while driving in eight runs.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters the 24-year-old opened eyes in Spring Training, making the decision to DFA him a difficult one.

"It's not always an easy decision when you have to DFA someone pretty much the day of Opening Day," Mendoza admitted (via SNY). "It took us all the way to [Opening Day]... He opened up a lot of eyes, not only here in the organization but with 29 other teams."
