In need of a spark, the New York Mets are calling up one of their top prospects to the big leagues.
Will Sammon of The Athletic reported Monday evening that the Mets are promoting top prospect A.J. Ewing, a move that will hopefully light a spark to a Mets offense that has been one of the league's worst this season.
Ewing, who is currently ranked as New York's No. 2 prospect according to MLB.com, started this season in Double-A Binghamton but quickly rose through the Mets' farm system as he was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse on April 27.
The Mets drafted Ewing in the fourth-round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of high school. They landed that pick as compensation after Jacob deGrom signed with the Texas Rangers after the 2022 offseason.
While it was a small sample size, the 21-year-old slashed .326/.392/.435 with four RBI and five stolen bases across 12 games for Triple-A Syracuse. Those impressive stats come after Ewing hit .349/.481/.571 over 18 games for Binghamton, resulting in the youngster getting promoted to Triple-A.
Across three minor league seasons, Ewing has swiped 70 stolen bases and has only been caught 11 times. Ewing's speed is a big part of his game; despite holding a career .339 batting average in the minors, he has slugged only two career home runs with 16 RBI, but has an impressive .961 OPS.
This was a move the Mets needed to make as they're currently in last place in the NL East and hold the worst record in all of baseball at 15-25, 40 games into the season.
New York's lineup has also taken a major hit with Francisco Lindor (left calf strain), Jorge Polanco (Achilles/wrist) and Luis Robert Jr. (lumbar disc herniation) all on the injured list with no timetable for their return.
The Mets begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday with the first of three against the Detroit Tigers, with Ewing expected to be in the lineup.
