Mets React to Major Luisangel Acuna News

It has been quite the start for manager Carlos Mendoza and the New York Mets to open up the 2025 season. After making a massive splash in free agency by signing Juan Soto and bringing slugger Pete Alonso back, the Mets have rolled to 22 wins in their first 33 games.

The Mets are sitting atop the National League East, and a lot of the credit goes to their offense.

Their approach at the plate has been all about putting the ball in play. Heading into Saturday’s action, New York had struck out just 247 times — the sixth fewest in Major League Baseball.

One of the driving forces behind that success has been second baseman Luisangel Acuna. On Friday, the team got some big news about their rising star: Acuna was named the National League Rookie of the Month for April.

The youngster from Venezuela has been red-hot to start the season, posting a .289 batting average through his first 28 games. Acuna has six doubles, seven stolen bases and 13 runs scored.

Acuna came over from the Texas Rangers' minor league system in July 2023 as part of the Max Scherzer trade. He made his MLB debut with the Mets in September 2024, appearing in 14 games and hitting .308 with three home runs. He also saw time in the postseason, playing in nine games and logging three at-bats.

While Acuna leads the Rookie of the Year conversation early, he’s got some competition in the National League. A few other names to watch include Los Angeles Dodgers right-handers Ben Casparius and Roki Sasaki, Milwaukee Brewers starter Chad Patrick and Washington Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews.
