The New York Mets had a rocky season in 2025. They finished with an 83-79 record, which put them second in the NL East, and they failed to make the postseason. This was the seventh time in the past nine years that the Mets didn't make an appearance in the playoffs.
This was the second season in the tenure of manager Carlos Mendoza, after he led New York to the NLCS in 2024. He will continue to lead New York next year.
Heading into the 2026 season, the Mets have many question marks surrounding their team in several areas. One of these areas is New York's pitching staff.
The Mets ranked in the bottom half of baseball in team ERA last season with a 4.03 mark. They were also toward the bottom of the standings in team WHIP at 1.32.
One pitcher that was missing for most of last season for New York was Frankie Montas. The starting right-hander made just nine appearances for the Mets with seven starts. He went 3-2 with a 6.28 ERA. His season was cut short in August due to a UCL tear that required Tommy John surgery.
The 32-year-old signed a two-year, $34 million contract with the Mets before the 2025 season that included a player option after the first year. Montas opted into the second season, but more news surrounding him emerged on Tuesday.
"Hearing Mets will be DFA’ing Frankie Montas," national MLB reporter Michael Marino said.

This is somewhat surprising news for Mets fans who were hoping to see a full season out of Montas in 2026.
However, with him being designated for assignment, New York will have to go in another direction, as it looks to improve its rotation.
