Mets send David Peterson to bullpen amid 5.40 ERA

The New York Mets are running out of answers in the middle of their 11-game losing streak. New York has been swept in their last three series, and will now attempt to finally get a win when they return home on Tuesday night to face the Minnesota Twins. One move the Mets are making to attempt to turn the tide is calling up Christian Scott from the minors and moving David Peterson to the bullpen.

The Mets were hoping that Peterson was going to be a key piece of their starting rotation heading into this season. He had been a starter for each of the past two seasons after spending some time in the bullpen over the first four seasons of his Mets career. However, much like the rest of New York’s season through the first month, things haven’t gone to plan.

Scott is a 26-year-old righty who last pitched in the majors for the Mets in 2024. He owned a 4.56 ERA over nine starts in the MLB, but underwent Tommy John surgery at the end of that season, which kept him off a mound until this season. Scott has a 5.23 ERA in three starts in Syracuse this season.

David Peterson’s future with the Mets will depend on how Scott fares in his return to the big leagues. While Peterson has a 5.40 ERA this season, Scott has never shown that he could be that much of a difference-maker. This could be a move to get Peterson’s confidence back before reinserting him into the rotation.
