The New York Mets’ postseason hopes will come down to the final day of the season. After securing a 5–0 shutout win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday, all eyes turn to the Cincinnati Reds. If the Reds lose, the Mets will leapfrog them for the final NL wild card spot. If not, both teams will enter Sunday tied, with Cincinnati holding the tiebreaker advantage.

Although the Mets have struggled in the second half, it has not been due to the play of superstar Juan Soto. The 26-year-old outfielder has had an excellent first season with the Mets, leading the team in most offensive categories. Over 159 games, Soto owns a .265 batting average, .396 on-base percentage, .924 OPS, 43 home runs and 105 RBIs.

During the Mets’ win on Saturday, Soto etched his name into the franchise’s record books despite going hitless in the contest (0 for 3). Although he didn’t record a hit, he did what he does best—working the count and drawing two walks.

With those two walks, Soto’s season total climbed to 126, setting a new franchise record and surpassing John Olerud’s mark of 125, which had stood since 1999 (h/t Sarah Langs).

It comes as no surprise that Soto set a new record, as his ability to read the strike zone remains his greatest strength. The left-handed slugger combines elite power with exceptional plate discipline, making him one of the toughest outs in baseball. His ability to recognize pitches and consistently take walks forces pitchers to stay in the zone, often leading to mistakes he can punish.

Soto’s 126 walks currently lead all of MLB, putting him on track to finish his fourth season out of his eight-year career leading the league in free passes. He previously led the majors in walks in 2021 with 145 (a career high), 2022 with 135, and 2023 with 132, and now sits atop the leaderboard again in 2025.

Soto’s ability to get on base has greatly benefited his teammate Pete Alonso, who has consistently driven him home this year hitting behind him.
