Mets Trade Deadline Firesale Sets Up Future Moves

The New York Mets have been a major disappointment this season, and the team began its sell-off ahead of the August 3 MLB Trade Deadline.

New York was expected to compete for a playoff spot this season after last year's disappointment. The Mets were aggressive again this offseason, but New York has struggled a ton.

Ahead of the deadline, the Mets dealt left-handed reliever A.J. Minter to the Minnesota Twins for infield prospects Bruin Agbayani and Billy Amick, which is a solid return.

Minter signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the Mets in January of 2025, so he's in the final year of his deal. However, he had a season-ending left lat injury in April of last year and didn't return until May.

Given his injury history and the volatility of relievers, the Mets did well in the return from the Twins.

Agbayani is the son of former Mets fan-favorite outfielder Benny Agbayani. His son will become the team's 22nd-ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and was the Twins’ sixth-round Draft pick last year out of St. Louis School in Honolulu.

Agbayani is known for his bat and has more power than his dad. Although it is cool for many older Mets fans to see another Agbayani in the system, he also deserves it and could reach the majors in the coming years and make an impact at the plate.

Amick, meanwhile, won't be in the Mets' top-30 prospects; he is an intriguing prospect due to his power. The 23-year-old is in Double-A and is hitting .217 with 23 home runs and 72 RBIs.

Amick is worth the flyer, as the power is there, and every team always needs more home run hitters.

Ultimately, the Mets did well in a trade for a pending free-agent reliever, as they got two intriguing infield prospects who both have the tools to eventually reach the majors.

Who Else Will Mets Trade Ahead of Deadline?

Minter was the first domino for the Mets, but he certainly won't be the last.

Despite being one of the worst teams this season, the Mets do have some interesting trade targets.

New York has some starting pitchers that should be traded, as Freddy Peralta is a pending free agent, and he hasn't panned out with the Mets. Peralta should be able to get the Mets a top-10 to 15 prospect in the team's system.

However, perhaps the biggest haul the Mets can get is trading starting pitcher Clay Holmes, who has a $13 million player option next season. The right-hander is rehabbing his way back from injury, but he's someone several teams will be interested in as a starter, and perhaps a high-leverage reliever to limit his appearances back from injury.

High-leverage reliever Luke Weaver should also fetch the Mets a good return, as teams always need relievers. And, by getting two solid infield prospects for Minter, that would be the floor for a Weaver return.

Along with the pitchers, the Mets are expected to try to trade the likes of Luis Robert Jr. and Brett Baty, among others.

Regardless, the Mets will be the team to watch ahead of the trade deadline as New York can rebuild its prospect pool amidst another lost season.
