Mets' Travis Jankowski out six to eight weeks after hand surgery

The hits — and not the good kind — kept coming for the first-place New York Mets ahead of Friday's home series-opener versus the rival Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field.

As Zach Braziller explained for the New York Post, Mets outfielder Travis Jankowski went on the injured list Friday with a left fourth metacarpal fracture. While Jankowski currently has a 10-day IL designation, he underwent a procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery and is expected to miss six to eight weeks of action.

Per Phillip Martinez of SNY, Mets manager Buck Showalter told reporters before Friday's contest that Jankowski suffered the setback while diving for a ball during Wednesday's 9-3 loss at the San Francisco Giants that dropped New York to 29-17 on the season.

Jankowski had become a fan-favorite among the Mets faithful for his hustle in the field and on the base paths. The 30-year-old hit the IL batting .209 with no home runs, two RBI and 11 runs scored across 33 games on the campaign.

In corresponding roster moves, the Mets recalled right-handed relief pitchers Yoan Lopez and Stephen Nogosek. The club optioned Thomas Szapucki back to Triple-A Syracuse.

Lopez is serving what became a reduced one-game suspension for his actions against the Phillies back on May 1 on Friday evening.
