It was learned earlier this week that New York Mets right-hander Tylor Megill had progressed to throwing off flat ground as he continues to work toward his return from the biceps tendinitis in his pitching arm that initially forced him onto the injured list back on May 12.
Per Anthony DiComo of the team's website, it appears Megill could be back in the rotation sooner than some feared.
"Megill is suffering from a relatively mild case of right-biceps tendinitis," DiComo explained. "He began throwing last weekend and could be back by early June."
This is a promising update considering Megill had been filling in for injured ace Jacob deGrom. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has yet to make his season debut this spring due to a stress reaction in the scapula of his pitching shoulder, but it was recently reported that deGrom could face big-league batters in a regular-season game as soon as "late June" or possibly in July before the All-Star break.
Megill went 4-2 with a 4.41 ERA in seven starts before his setback.
The Mets are also set to be without three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer for roughly five to seven more weeks after he was shut down last Thursday with an oblique strain.
Despite these injury woes, the 29-17 Amazins began Thursday's MLB action holding a seven-game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings.
