Michael Conforto's Dodgers Future Receives New Development on Wednesday

The Los Angeles Dodgers are gearing up for another postseason run, fresh off a World Series title in 2024.

The team added reinforcements at the trade deadline, notably Alex Call, who was acquired from the Washington Nationals as a depth piece. The 30-year-old veteran has been excellent in a platoon role, posting a .278 batting average, .381 on-base percentage, .825 OPS, and four extra-base hits across his first 19 games.

Call has been a pleasant surprise in the outfield, routinely appearing in left field in place of Michael Conforto, who has struggled since signing a $17 million deal with the Dodgers.

Conforto is batting just .189 with a .618 OPS and nine home runs through 406 plate appearances, leading many fans to question manager Dave Roberts’ decision to keep him in the starting lineup.

Ahead of Wednesday’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, with the Dodgers looking for a sweep, an update surfaced that Call tweaked his back on Tuesday and could be headed to the injured list.

Freddie Freeman is out of the lineup tonight because of a neck stinger, Dave Roberts said. Expects him back Friday. Alex Call is also out after tweaking his back last night. They’re hoping he avoids IL, but will see how he feels over coming days,” wrote Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.

Michael Conforto’s Role Extended After Alex Call Injury Setback

With Call’s availability now in question, the Dodgers may be forced to continue using Conforto in the outfield—despite his role being in serious doubt prior to the injury.

The outfield was beginning to appear crowded, with Enrique Hernandez returning on Tuesday and Hyeseong Kim and Tommy Edman set to follow.

Although rosters will expand to 28 players in September, Conforto’s inability to turn things around—paired with the return of multiple contributors—had him looking like the odd man out.

However, if Call is forced to miss time, Conforto will most likely remain with the team. After a strong July in which he went 18-for-66 with an .827 OPS, the 32-year-old has cooled off drastically in August, hitting just .153 with nine total hits in 22 games
