Michael Fulmer Elects Free Agency

Michael Fulmer went unclaimed on waivers and elected free agency, according to the MLB.com transaction log. The Angels designated the veteran reliever for assignment on Sunday when Yusei Kikuchi returned from the injured list.

Fulmer had a brief stay in the organization. He signed a minor league deal on August 11, was called up within four days, then dropped from the roster a week later. Fulmer tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in three appearances. He used a six-pitch mix led by a 90 mph cutter while sitting around 95 mph with his fastball.

The former Rookie of the Year winner has pitched well in Triple-A this season. He spent most of the year with the Giants’ top affiliate and has combined for a 2.93 ERA across 43 minor league frames. He’s recorded a near-29% strikeout rate against a slightly elevated 11.5% walk percentage.

That should be enough for Fulmer to at least find another minor league opportunity in short order. He’d need to sign somewhere by the end of next Monday to be eligible for postseason play.
