Milwaukee Brewers 1B Rhys Hoskins to Be Out Much Longer than Fans Expected

On Monday, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the high-powered Los Angeles Dodgers by the score 9-1. In a showdown of All-Star pitchers, Freddy Peralta tossed six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out seven. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, though, did not make it out of the first inning, giving up five runs (three earned) as Milwaukee batted around in the bottom of the frame.

The Brewers’ runs in the first inning all came with two outs, and the first three were curtesy of a three-run home run hit by first baseman Andrew Vaughn in his very first plate appearance with the team. He became just the fifth player in franchise history to homer in his first at bat as a Brewer and the first since 2006.

Vaughn had just been called up to the Major League squad from Triple-A Nashville, where he had been playing ever since the Brewers acquired him in the Aaron Civale trade with the Chicago White Sox earlier this year.

Andrew Vaughn Started for the Milwaukee Brewers Because of an Injury to Rhys Hoskins

Vaughn got the call up to Milwaukee to take the roster spot of everyday first baseman Rhys Hoskins, who was injured in the Brewers’ series against the Miami Marlins. Shortstop Joey Ortiz (who is back in the lineup on Tuesday after being benched for two straight games) made a throw to first that pulled Hoskins off the bag.

While Milwaukee’s first baseman was able to apply the tag and get the out, the collision with the runner injured his thumb. He finished the inning, but his inability to swing a bat due to the injury forced the team to pull him from the game.

X-rays on his thumb were negative, but further imaging showed that he had a grade-two sprain. As a result, the Brewers made the decision to put him on the 10-day injured list and call up Vaughn.

When it was announced that Hoskins was going on the 10-day injured list, many fans thought he would be out for just that: 10 days. If not 10 days, then perhaps a bit longer, but not much.

Unfortunately, though, an update today from manager Pat Murphy indicates that the team does not expect Hoskins back until mid-to-late August. That is, in over a month.

Hoskins is hitting .242/.340/.428 with 12 home runs and 42 RBI on the season. Losing him in the lineup is a big loss as he is one of the team’s more powerful right-handed bats, though Milwaukee is hopeful Vaughn (who is also right-handed) will be able to fill the void.

As the post above indicates, injured centerfielder Blake Perkins is set to re-start his rehab assignment later this week. He had missed the entire season so far due to a fractured leg, and then was pulled from his rehab assignment due to a soft tissue injury.
