Early in the 2025 MLB offseason, the Milwaukee Brewers made an expected trade, sending All-Star closer Devin Williams to the New York Yankees for starting pitcher Nestor Cortes and infield prospect Caleb Durbin. So far this season, Cortes has barely pitched due to an injury, and may find it difficult to retake a spot in the starting rotation as Milwaukee as constructed on of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball.
Williams, meanwhile, has been a disaster for the Yankees. He lost the closer role early in the season following a slow start, and has not improved much as the year has progressed. The former Brewers star is currently 3-3 with a 4.72 ERA and 13 saves.
And while he did not start the season on Milwaukee’s Big League roster, Durbin has turned out to be just about everything the Brewers hoped he would be when they traded for him.
On Saturday afternoon, the Brewers found themselves trailing the Washington Nationals 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning. However, recently acquired first baseman Andrew Vaughn tied the game with a two-RBI double.
After pinch runner Andruw Monasterio went to third base on a weak ground ball, Durbin laced a walk-off single to give Milwaukee the 6-5 victory and their sixth win in a row.
It was Durbin’s third walk-off hit this year, making him the first rookie with that many before the All-Star Game since Gomer Hodge in 1971 (which was the only year Hodge played in the Majors).

On the season, Durbin is hitting .261/.346/.363 with four home runs and 32 RBI. He is also playing stellar defense at third base, helping to give the Brewers, once again, one of the best defensive infields in all of baseball.
