The Milwaukee Brewers announced several moves ahead of Saturday’s game in Toronto. Anticipated by previous reports, Jackson Chourio’s return comes as no surprise. The Brewers also have another arm on tap with Robert Gasser completing his rehab assignment. For the time being, he will remain at Triple-A.
These moves, though positive updates, brought corresponding demotions for two other players in the organization. Outfielder Brandon Lockridge, acquired at the trade deadline from San Diego, has been shipped to the minors.
In addition, to make room for Lockridge on the Triple-A roster, the team’s opening day third baseman, Oliver Dunn, was designated for assignment. Although he could clear waivers and end up back at Nashville, the transaction signals his fallen stock among Brewers prospects. His time with the franchise is waning.
With Chourio back, someone had to go. That someone was going to be either Lockridge or Jake Bauers, and with Rhys Hoskins still rehabbing, Bauers’ ability to play first base may come in handy.
Although the Brewers like Lockridge’s roster fit, his skillset – defense first, speed on the bases – overlaps with that of Blake Perkins, who will absorb the full brunt of those duties for now. In 20 games for the Brewers, Lockridge has produced a slash line of .261/.308/.370 while impressing with the glove.
Meanwhile, Gasser being finally cleared for regular reps is great news following his successful rehab assignment. Injuries have kept him off the mound since a small but sparkling rookie sample (5 starts, 2.57 ERA). If the Brewers need a spot start or bullpen help, which are both highly possible scenarios, Gasser could get the call.
As for Dunn, his days in the organization are likely numbered. Even if he clears waivers, Caleb Durbin, the guy who replaced him early this season, has laid firm claim to the hot corner. At Double-A, Brock Wilken is waiting in the wings at the same position.
After earning over 100 plate appearances in 2024 and making the opening day cut this season, Dunn fizzled out to a poor start and has struggled at Nashville. In 97 games there, the former 11th round pick is hitting just .201/.304/.326.
