After a month-long absence, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio is set to return this weekend in Toronto, the team announced. The lineup could really use him back, as Blake Perkins has cooled off and Sal Frelick needs regular rest days to manage knee soreness. Nearing the end of an 18-game stretch with no days off, the Brewers are exhausted, battered, and in need of reinforcements.

Chourio hasn’t exactly looked good at the plate during his rehab assignment. In five games, the sophomore slugger is 1-19 with eight strikeouts. Manager Pat Murphy isn’t worried over his struggles at Triple-A Nashville, though, as he believes they stem from a clear cause.

Chourio’s tough time at Nashville shouldn’t carry over once he’s back with Milwaukee Brewers

Following a slow start, Chourio picked it up at the plate and was scorching hot in July, before he strained his hamstring. He has followed up an outstanding rookie campaign with almost identical overall numbers in year two: 17 homeruns, 67 RBIs, and 18 steals in 106 games, alongside a slash line of .276/.311/.474. Before the injury, he was only trending up.

With a month left in the regular season, Chourio will look to finish his sophomore season strong. As far as picking up where he left off, his rehab numbers aren’t encouraging, but Murphy sees an obvious reason for the “slump.”

Via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com: “To be honest, when you’re on a rehab assignment for the first time, you don’t know what to expect,” Murphy said. “He’s not in ‘compete mode,’ it doesn’t seem, because he doesn’t want to push it because he doesn’t want to get hurt again. Because he’s never been hurt. So I think we have a lot of that going on.”

As a rookie, Chourio played 148 games and had barely missed a contest this season. As Murphy says, the 21-year-old isn’t used to being out or having to work his way back from the sidelines.

“He’s not going to all of a sudden regress hitting. He has to see pitches. He’ll be fine.”

If Chourio is in the lineup to start the series on Friday, he will likely face Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber making his second start of 2025. Still recognized as an ace, Bieber has missed most of the last two seasons injured.
