The Milwaukee Brewers have an eye for talent and when possible they try to secure those assets. In recent years, Freddy Peralta, Aaron Ashby, and Jackson Chourio have all received contract extensions early in their careers, or in Chourio’s case before he even made his MLB debut.
According to league source Francys Romero, the Brewers are now interested in working out a contract extension with phenom pitcher Jacob Misiorowski. The 6’8″ hurler has made just five MLB starts, but will be an All-Star this year and has superstar potential.
Romero reported that the Brewers are very interested in extending Misiorowski. This implies that all of his pre-arbitration and arbitration years would be bought out, so a deal spanning at minimum six years. For reference, Milwaukee signed Chourio to an eight year, $82 million deal, but with multiple club options that can make it span 10 years.
Finding comparisons for what a Misiorowski contract extension would look like is difficult. Back in 2014, Chris Archer signed a six year extension after throwing just 158 big league innings. His deal at the time guaranteed him $25.5 million and maxed out at $43.75, but a deal in today’s market a Misiorowski extension would be much larger.
More noteworthy news from Romero’s reporting is that he indicated earlier this year Milwaukee had an offer on the table. With Misiorowski having just made his MLB debut a month ago, that deal likely was presented beforehand.
Romero also indicated that the sides are still far apart. However, interest from both sides seems to be there, so hopefully a deal can get done that is advantageous for both parties.
