The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, Milwaukee won the first two games of the series, and so they end the weekend and head into the off day with a series win against a division rival.
Their two runs came on solo home runs from backup catcher Danny Jansen, his first in a Brewers uniform, and Caleb Durbin. Interestingly, Durbin’s 11 home runs this season are the most he has hit in any year as a professional.
Unfortunately, though, it appears that Milwaukee is going to be down another starting pitcher as they prepare for the playoffs.
Late in the offseason this past year, the Brewers signed veteran left-handed starter Jose Quintana to a one-year contract. He did not begin the season on the roster because his signing occurred so late and he needed an extended Spring Training in order to get ready.
When he did debut, though, he became the first Milwaukee pitcher since CC Sabathia to win his first four starts with the team. Entering play on Sunday, he was 11-6 with a 3.88 ERA.
Over his last several outings, Quintana has struggled with control, unable to keep runners off base and racking up high pitch counts in early innings.
Such was the case on Sunday against the Cardinals as he needed 40 pitches to get through what was a three-run second inning. And while he was able to limit the damage to just three runs, and while was able to get through the next two frames effectively, he still came out of the contest after just four innings.
Unfortunately, that decision was made due to an injury:
Pat Murphy says Jose Quintana left in a walking boot and is getting an MRI.
It is a calf injury that occurred when he was covering first base.

Quintana will get an MRI done on his calf to better determine the severity of the injury. The Brewers will not know how long he will be out until then.
The concern, obviously, is how his injury could affect Milwaukee’s postseason rotation. It is clear already that Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta, and Quinn Priester should be their first three starters in any given series. However, they need a fourth starter, and Jacob Misiorowski has struggled mightily as of late.
If Quintana has to miss substantial time, it will be interesting to see what the team decides to do with that fourth starting spot.
