The Milwaukee Brewers announced today that Joey Ortiz and Craig Yoho were being added to their Major League roster as MLB rosters are allowed to expand by two when the calendar turns to September. By this point of the year, teams have played well over 120 games and face injuries and general tiredness of their players. Expanding the roster allows teams to add some extra depth and allow their regulars to rest without having to burn through minor league options.
Ortiz had been on the 10-day injured with a strained hamstring. Fortunately, he only needed the minimum of 10 days to recover and is back in the starting lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies. Yoho, who has an 8.22 ERA in seven Major League games this season, was recalled to give Milwaukee an extra bullpen arm as they are finally finishing a string of 19 games in 18 days.
One of the pitchers that Brewers fans wanted to see called up when the rosters expanded was left-handed starter Robert Gasser, who has been out since last season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. He is currently on the roster down in Nashville, and some thought that he could make his return this September due to the expanded rosters.
And he still might, but it will not be as a starter. According to the Brewers, they want to use him as a reliever down the stretch:
Brewers pitching prospect Robert Gasser is going to shift away from a starters’ schedule at Triple-A Nashville and will make multi-inning relief appearances to prep for a possible late-season role with the Brewers. Gasser recently completed his rehab from TJ surgery.

Before getting hurt last season, Gasser was 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his first career MLB starts. In nine starts during his rehab assignment and subsequent activation in Nashville, he is 1-1 with a 3.28 ERA.
The Brewers currently have multiple relievers, including closer Trevor Megill, long reliever DL Hall, and the often-used Grant Anderson, currently on the injured list. Additionally, Logan Henderson is out for the season after recently being moved to the 60-day injured list.
Gasser coming back will certainly go a long way to giving Milwaukee’s bullpen a much-needed extra arm.
