Before the All-Star break, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick was removed in the middle of a game with a leg injury. Per his manager Pat Murphy, his leg had been affecting for about a week beforehand, but after looking hobbled after stealing a base and then later making a diving catch in foul territory, the decision was made to take him out.

Frelick has since undergone testing and has been diagnosed with a grade one hamstring strain. Even though the All-Star break has provided him with some much needed rest, Brewers beat reporter Adam McCavly said his status for post All-Star break play is still up in the air and the team is waiting to see if he needs to be placed on the injured list or not.

How might the Milwaukee Brewers temporarily fill Sal Frelick’s spot if he is placed on the injured list?

If Frelick’s hamstring injury requires him to be placed on the injured list, it can be retroactive for up to three days from his placement. For example, if on Friday, July 18 the Brewers determine that Frelick is unable to go and needs at least another week’s worth of rest, they can make the start date to the injured list retroactive to July 15.

Should Frelick require a trip to the injured list, at minimum Milwaukee would have to temporarily fill his position for seven days after the All-Star break. This could result in Christian Yelich playing the field more, Jake Bauers drawing more starts in left field, and Isaac Collins shifting to right field.

Another option would be Blake Perkins being promoted for his 2025 debut. A less likely scenario is having newcomer Andrew Vaughn, who is filling in at first base for the injured Rhys Hoskins, play in the outfield. Vaughn has experience in the grass, but last appeared there defensively during a MLB game in 2022.

Without knowing where Frelick is at in his recovery, this is all pure speculation. Hopefully the gold glover is ready to go and starts post All-Star break stretch healthy.
