Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Brice Turang sat out the series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday as he deals with ongoing knee pain and seeks further medical evaluation.
The 26-year-old underwent an MRI earlier in the day. Initial results showed no major concerns, according to the team, but he is pursuing second opinions to get a clearer picture of the issue.
Manager Pat Murphy explained the situation to ESPN, saying Turang is “nursing knee pain and just got to a point where he really needs to take some time.”
Murphy continued, “We don’t know how long. They’re saying day-to-day. He had an MRI today. The MRI did not reveal so far anything we’re too worried about. Obviously, he can’t play tonight.”
David Hamilton stepped in at second base for the Brewers in Turang’s place. The team will monitor the situation closely over the coming days as more information becomes available from the additional evaluations.
Turang has been a steady presence in the Milwaukee lineup this season. In 115 games, he is hitting .268 with a .360 on-base percentage and .450 slugging percentage. Those numbers include 16 home runs, 76 RBI and 16 stolen bases.
His recent form has been quieter. Over 12 games in August, Turang is batting .245 with a .315 on-base percentage and .306 slugging mark, along with no home runs, eight RBI and one stolen base.
A Platinum Glove Award winner in the past for his defensive work, Turang gives the Brewers strong play in the middle of the infield. Losing him for any extended stretch would hurt a club that sits at the top of the National League standings.
The Brewers have relied on his combination of solid defense and left-handed hitting production throughout the year. An injured list stay remains a possibility depending on what the second opinions reveal.
Murphy and the coaching staff will wait for those results before deciding the next steps. Rest appears to be the immediate plan while the full extent of the knee issue is sorted out.
Meanwhile, the Brewers continue to manage other roster situations. Outfielder Sal Frelick has been on the injured list since mid-July with a right shoulder strain. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 8 and has served primarily as a designated hitter in those games.
Frelick is expected back sometime in mid-August after making multiple rehab appearances. His return would give manager Pat Murphy more options in the outfield and overall lineup construction.
In Frelick’s absence, the club has turned to young outfielder Luis Lara. The 21-year-old prospect, who signed a seven-year contract earlier this year, has appeared in 27 big-league games since his July 7 debut. He is batting .233 with a .329 on-base percentage and .329 slugging percentage, collecting 11 RBI and two stolen bases in that span.
Once Frelick rejoins the active roster, Murphy will face decisions about how to deploy the available talent. The timing of Turang’s knee problem adds another layer of complexity for a team fighting to stay atop the standings.
Thursday’s absence marked the start of what the Brewers hope will be a short setback for their regular second baseman. Further updates are expected in the days ahead as the second opinions come in and the medical staff assesses how much recovery time is needed.
The series against the Dodgers continues, with the Brewers adjusting on the fly while key contributors work their way back to full health.
