Milwaukee Brewers: Recently Waived Outfielder Clears Waivers, Sent to Triple-A Nashville

The Milwaukee Brewers will have a big question regarding their outfield personnel when the regular season resumes on Friday following the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. Gold Glove right fielder Sal Frelick was injured in the final game before the break when he made an incredible sliding catch in foul territory.

It was later revealed that he had hurt his hamstring stealing second base earlier in the game, as well as that he has been playing through some discomfort for quite some time.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Frelick sustained a grade-one hamstring strain. However, the Brewers have not made the decision to put him on the injured list, instead waiting to see how his injury responds to treatment during the few days off that the team has due to the break.

But if he misses an extended period of time, Milwaukee has a plethora of outfielders with Major League experience that can step in.

Milwaukee Brewers Outfielder Drew Avans Cleared Waivers

One player that the Brewers have already used for some outfield depth earlier this season is 29-year-old Drew Avans, whom they claimed off of waivers from the Athletics back in June. He appeared in just one game for Milwaukee and went 0-2 in three plate appearances.

Prior to signing with the Brewers, he had appeared in seven games with the Athletics, but had just two hits in 15 at bats.

While playing for the Nashville Sounds, Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate, Avans has hit .261/.358/.391 with two home runs, 12 RBI, and 12 stolen bases in 23 games.

Avans, though, was placed on waivers by the Brewers when Blake Perkins was reinstated from the injured list and sent to Nashville on a rehab assignment. On Thursday, it was announced that he had cleared waivers and would be returning to the Sounds:

With Frelick’s status post-All-Star Break in doubt, Perkins is the likely candidate to replace him in the lineup. A Gold Glove-caliber centerfielder, his return would allow Jackson Chourio to play right field while Frelick is out.

Avans would re-join a Nashville outfield that also boasts Daz Cameron, who spent a few weeks with Milwaukee earlier this season before also being placed on waivers, clearing them, and being sent back to the Sounds.
