Following consecutive one-run losses to the Pirates on May 23 and 24, the Milwaukee Brewers sat 25-28, struggling to sustain winning momentum.
Fast forward to June 6 and they are 34-29, victorious in nine of their last 10, and just a game behind the Giants for the final NL wild card. In Central division, Milwaukee has crept within a half-game of the Cardinals for second place.
It has been a refreshing turnaround for the Brewers, and now they’re getting some recognition for it. After being mired around no. 20 in ESPN’s power rankings, the Brew Crew sprang seven spots to 13 in the latest list. How have they done it? Among many other things, two key bats have been pivotal to their surge.
May 25, the Brewers tipped off an eight-game win streak by taking a pair of one-run games themselves, followed by two extra-innings wins to complete the sweep of Boston. The Phillies were next to get the broom. Milwaukee then extended its string of series wins over the Reds to 12 straight by taking two of three in Cincinnati to close out the road trip.
During their 10-game heater, they have played well on both sides, scoring 62 runs while allowing just 29. Against the Phillies, the offense erupted for 17 runs, tying a season-high.
Beginning Friday night, the upcoming homestand features a current wild card occupant (San Diego 35-26), a division foe (St. Louis 34-28) and an Atlanta team (27-34) that has strong playoff potential if they ever figure things out. It presents a prime opportunity for the Brewers to gain meaningful ground in the race for the postseason.
The offensive upswing might be the most encouraging development. After slow starts, Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio, two of the lineup’s most important bats, have heated up. For both hitters, a return to last year’s form has propelled the rejuvenated offense.
Both Yelich and Chourio began their respective hot streaks a few games before the team really got going. In mid-April, Chourio went hitless for five straight games, then finally found green against the Orioles. In 62 at bats since May 21, he has hit .338 with three homeruns and 12 RBIs. He’s stolen four bases and scored 14 runs.
Yelich picked it up in the Pirates series. Dating back to May 22, he has punished pitchers at a .429 clip, smacking six homers and driving in 15 – in just 49 at bats. His scorcher of a streak included a pair of two-dinger games in the space of eight days. During June, he has actually cooled a bit, going a mere 4 for 15.
Getting those two going in the two and three spots in the batting order has been crucial. Elsewhere, Sal Frelick has been excellent, hitting .291 with a .756 OPS, and first baseman Rhys Hoskins is having an improved second season in Milwaukee at first base (.269, .815). If William Contreras ever starts hitting, the Brewers will have a formidable first two-thirds of a lineup.
They will have a chance to keep the good times going tonight against the Padres. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM CT.
