The echoes of cowbells aren’t fading anytime soon. Instead, they’re building to a crescendo as Mississippi State baseball gears up for a 2026 run that has fans dreaming of Omaha again.

With new head coach Brian O’Connor making an immediate splash in the transfer portal and critical Bulldogs choosing loyalty over the pros, the Diamond Dawgs are reloading with a roster blend of fresh firepower and proven grit.

O’Connor’s first big splash came with the commitment of Virginia standout Aidan Teel, a Third-Team All-ACC centerfielder who started all 50 games in 2024. Teel racked up 59 hits, 51 runs, and 40 RBIs, including 20 doubles and seven home runs for the Cavaliers. The New Jersey native brings two-way versatility, with 20 pitching appearances and six saves on his 2024 résumé.

Teel isn’t coming alone. He’s part of a package deal that includes fellow ex-Cavaliers LHP Tomas Valincius, OF James Nunnellee, and utility man Chone James, all of whom were in Starkville for O’Connor’s June 5 introduction at Dudy Noble Field. Joining them is Illinois OF Vytas Valincius, the older brother of Tomas, who adds Big Ten toughness to the mix.

But this team isn’t just about shiny new names. Centerfielder Bryce Chance, a fan favorite and longtime leader, announced he’s back for his fifth season.

“Bulldog family, the past four years have been a blast. Here’s to one more,” Chance posted on X.

Chance had a breakout 2025, hitting .332 with 69 hits, 14 doubles, 43 RBIs, and a 19-game hitting streak to cap the season. With 140 starts and a career .312 average, his return locks down a leadership core O’Connor can build around.

The most powerful statement came from Ace Reese, who stunned fans by announcing his return despite MLB buzz. The SEC Newcomer of the Year mashed 21 home runs, 66 RBIs, and hit .371, including a blistering .400 average in conference play, both SEC bests. Reese led the league in total bases (161) and slugging percentage (.767), becoming the lineup’s anchor.

“Let’s run it back,” he wrote on social media. A phrase that lit up Starkville.

Also returning are pitchers Ryan McPherson and Dane Burns, and infielder Charlie Foster, rounding out a core group with real SEC battle scars. Together with the incoming transfers, Mississippi State is quietly putting together one of the most complete rosters in college baseball.

Brian O’Connor isn’t just recruiting names, he’s building a culture. With postseason experience, veteran leadership, and young talent in key positions, the Bulldogs are poised to flip the script from portal losses to title hopes.

Keep your eyes on Dudy Noble. Because when old Dawgs return and new blood thrives, something special’s cooking in Starkville, and it smells like June baseball.
