Francisco Lindor is arguably the bona fide leader of the New York Mets clubhouse after several cornerstones of the team departed during the offseason. The five-time All-Star is putting himself on the Hall of Fame track with his display for the Mets over the past few seasons. However, the 2026 campaign may not start the way Lindor would like.
On Tuesday, New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns revealed Francisco Lindor is under examination for a left hamate bone injury that may require surgery. MLB analyst Dan Plesac feels this will be a massive setback for the Mets if the switch-hitting shortstop starts the season on the IL, with a new second baseman in Marcus Semien joining the team.
“It’s a little bit of a concern, too—a new double-play partner in Marcus Semien, who the Mets acquired,” Plesac said on MLB Network. “It’s definitely something you don’t want to have right away when you start a spring training camp.

“You hear that slogan, “Hope springs eternal,” and all of a sudden one of your best players on your team is going to start on the IL. So, hopefully, he’ll come back and be fine. But I’m sure he will miss not having those reps with Marcus Semien.”
New York began the offseason by trading outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semien in November. They also added Bo Bichette from the free agent market last month, although he is projected to be the starting third baseman of the team.
Dan Plesac believes the absence of Francisco Lindor will be a huge blow to the New York Mets, as he is indispensable to their lineup. But this should not be a major injury, so Lindor might make a swift comeback.
“He’s been a terrific player for the Mets. I know he’s taken a lot of criticism early on during that contract with the Mets. But he’s been as solid as you can get. Posts up every day,” Plesac said.

“This shouldn’t be the type of injury that’s something serious. It may be when he comes back. Normally it’s somewhere in the four-to-six-week range. And it probably depends on how much pain he can tolerate with that.”
Francisco Lindor has 24.3 bWAR over the past four years with the Mets, while playing over 150 games in each season. He batted .266/.341/.471 with a 128 OPS+ and averaged 30 home runs, 95 RBIs, and 26 stolen bases during this period.
