MLB Announces Manny Machado News Before Nationals-Padres

The San Diego Padres currently sit at 42-35, but their season appears to be hanging by a thread as they trail the Milwaukee Brewers for the third Wild Card spot by 0.5 games and the Los Angeles Dodgers by 5.0 games in the NL West.

After a promising start that saw them begin the season with seven consecutive wins, the Padres’ offense has struggled to find its rhythm, ranking tied for 18th in runs per game at 4.3, 27th in home runs with only 65, and 22nd in OPS at .695.

Although the Padres’ offensive production has struggled mightily this season, third baseman Manny Machado remains San Diego's bright spot.

Since signing a record breaking 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres in 2019, Machado has anchored the middle of the order with his power and consistency.

He is off to an excellent start in his age-32 season. In 77 games this year, he has posted an OPS of .865 while contributing 12 home runs, 46 RBIs, 30 walks, and 8 stolen bases, and he has accumulated 2.9 WAR.

MLB announced on X today that Machado is the National League’s leading vote getter at third base in the All-Star Game with 1,683,022 votes.

If selected, it would mark his seventh All-Star Game appearance—his third as a member of the Padres. Over his 14-year career, Machado has earned two Silver Slugger awards, two Gold Gloves, and one Platinum Glove.

Since joining San Diego, he has played a pivotal role, leading the team to the postseason three times including one memorable NLCS appearance in 2023 after defeating the division rival Dodgers in the divisional round.
