MLB Insider Identifies Surprise Eugenio Suárez Trade Destination

Anyone who has paid attention to MLB trade rumors these last few weeks has almost certainly seen the idea linking Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez to the New York Yankees.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal isn't ruling out the Yankees acquiring Suárez, especially not after the team's recent extended skid. However, Rosenthal identified a surprise trade candidate on Friday: the Milwaukee Brewers, who sit only two games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

Rosenthal proposed the Brewers use their "surplus" of starting pitching to acquire Suárez, who just earned All-Star honors for the second time. The veteran third baseman entered Friday batting .249 with 29 homers, 75 RBIs, and a .873 OPS.

Suárez is a free agent after the season, and he's owed $5 million after the deadline.

"For such a pitcher, though, the Brewers almost certainly would want more than two months of Suárez," Rosenthal wrote.

"And the Diamondbacks," Rosenthal continued, "as they face the potential losses of righties Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly in free agency, might at least need to consider such a deal."

Whether or not Suárez is worth the risk as a rental is its own conversation. Brewers fans of a certain age remember CC Sabathia's incredible three months in 2008—and they likely also remember Sabathia bolting for the New York Yankees in free agency.

Suárez is nonetheless on pace for his best numbers since his 49-homer outburst in 2019. Let's also not forget that the Brewers haven't won a pennant since 1982. If they feel that Suárez is worth the risk, then there's no reason they shouldn't take the opportunity to add him within the coming weeks.
