MLB Insider Links Cubs to Trade for Braves' Chris Sale

Earlier today, MLB insider Jon Heyman appeared on "The Mully & Haugh Show" on 670 The Score. Heyman thinks the Cubs could be in the market for Chris Sale if the Braves become sellers at the trade deadline. Heyman said it's "worth dreaming" about for Cubs fans.

The Cubs have been in the starting pitching market all season after they lost Justin Steele for the season early in April.

Even if it's not a high probability, if the Cubs could orchestrate a trade for Sale to Chicago, their vision of World Series contention could suddenly become much clearer.

"I wouldn't say zero for Chris Sale, though they're signaling they're a buyer as of now," Heyman said of the possibility the Braves move Sale. "But they are seven or eight games under, Atlanta ... So there are some names potentially that could be aces for teams that could potentially get traded.

"We're not likely going to see an ace traded, but it's worth dreaming to think about potentially Chris Sale or Freddy Peralta being traded, although I don't think Peralta will get traded to the Cubs."

Heyman's not optimistic about Sale being on the move at the deadline, but after the Devers trade, anything can happen. However, it's doubtful the Brewers would trade their ace to intra-division rivals.

Sale has earned just about every accolade you could think of over his 15-year sensational career in the MLB. The addition of the reigning Cy Young award winner would put the Cubs in the conversation as favorites to compete for the World Series.

Sale has followed his Cy Young season with a 2.79 ERA in 2025, and he averages nearly 12 strikeouts per nine innings.

The eight-time All-Star is in the second year of a two-year, $38 million contract, with an $18 million club option for 2026.

Sale would cost a hefty price for the Cubs, but if President Jed Hoyer wants to go all-in on 2025, Sale might be the guy to do it for. The Cubs would pair the World Series champion with Shota Imanaga and an offense that is second in the league in runs scored in 2025.
