MLB Insider Lists 3 Candidates For Baltimore Orioles Manager After Brutal Start

MLB Insider Jon Heyman was on MLB Network this morning and listed three managerial candidates the Baltimore Orioles could hire. The Orioles fired former Manager Brandon Hyde on May 17. Hyde was fired after the Orioles started with a rough 15-28 record. Ryan Flaherty, David Ross, and Skip Schumacher were the three candidates that Heyman listed. Let’s take a look at each candidate individually. 

Ryan Flaherty 

Flaherty played in Baltimore from 2012 to 2017 and is currently the bench coach of the Chicago Cubs. Heyman said specifically that Flaherty obviously wouldn’t be a candidate for the job right now since he already has a position. It seems like the Baltimore Orioles could take a deeper look into Flaherty in the offseason if they choose to wait that long. 

A former player with connections to the organization will always get a look when a team is hiring a manager. It’ll just depend on how long the Orioles want to wait, and what they value in their next manager. 

David Ross

David Ross is the guy who has the most managerial experience out of the three. He was manager of the Chicago Cubs for four seasons spanning from 2020 through the end of the 2023 season. The Cubs only made the playoffs once during Ross’s tenure, which took place in the 2020 season. He won the 2016 World Series as a player with Chicago, so he knows what it takes to play in the postseason. 

Ross seems like a perfect candidate for the Baltimore Orioles young players, as he’s the manager who has the most experience. Some of the Baltimore Orioles’ young players have taken a step back, so Ross could be a prime candidate for the Orioles if that’s what they want to utilize. Ross isn’t in an MLB job as of right now, so he could join the team if they decide to make a move soon. 

Skip Schumaker

Schumaker has two years of managerial experience with the Miami Marlins. He led the club to the playoffs in 2023, where they would end up losing in the Wild Card Series to Philadelphia. Schumaker is like Ross in that he is a two-time World Series champion with the St. Louis Cardinals, winning in 2006 and 2011. 

The 2023 Marlins were a young team, and Schumaker was able to take them to the playoffs. He and Ross could have more similarities in the fact that they can help out young players. The Baltimore Orioles have some good options here.
