The Boston Red Sox are at a crossroads. With the MLB trade deadline approaching, there are plenty of teams hounding Craig Breslow and company to try and land Alex Bregman in a trade.
However, while there are plenty of teams looking to add Bregman, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has a firm stance on how the Red Sox should approach a potential Bregman deal. He thinks such a trade idea makes no sense for the Red Sox.
"For the Red Sox, trading Bregman makes no sense," Rosenthal writes. "Even if they cannot sign him to an extension before the deadline, even if they stumble while facing a difficult schedule over the next three weeks."
The Red Sox, with a winning record and a chance to make a run for the postseason, have no reason to trade Bregman. Even though he's likely planning to hit the open market after this season, barring an extension, the Red Sox, in Rosenthal's opinion, should not trade him.
Bregman brings a lot of upside to the Red Sox lineup and could help bolster the team into the postseason in 2025. Moving on from Bregman would also need to be for the right price, and since he could opt out and become a free agent, Boston would not likely get a strong return for the veteran third baseman.
Rosenthal pointed out that the chance of a Bregman deal is "remote." In describing how remote, or unlikely, a Bregman trade is to occur, he made a wild comparison. "You'd sooner see a certain 5-foot-4 reporter (Rosenthal) in a bow tie dunking on the 7-foot-3 Victor Wembanyama."
To call this comparison a wild one would be an understatement. But it gets the point home. Rosenthal isn't capable of dunking on Wembanyama. It's not going to happen. As is a Bregman trade. It's just not going to happen in Rosenthal's eyes.
It's a firm stance to take, especially amid all of the trade rumors swirling around. With the Red Sox's seven-game winning streak and Bregman on the cusp of returning to the lineup, Boston could begin to contend for a top Wild Card spot in the AL.
Moving on from Bregman right now makes very little sense. If Boston were significantly under .500 and there were major concerns over the roster, then a trade might come into play. But, in the current situation, Bregman is unlikely to be moved.
